In my time on the air, I've noticed that the standard phonetic alphabet isn't always used. In fact, there are several different versions which are used used, depending on whom you are talking with. I was given this chart by K3US, and I am posting this, with his permission. I hope to keep this up to date, please feel free to add a comment to the post if you see any other abbreviations commonly in use.
Phonetic Alphabet

This whole post started as a plan for Field Day, to get some information about it ready to help for new hams wanting to participate. I'm going to be posting several more posts in the upcoming weeks to help out with that preparation, so be on the look out!
It should be noted that every now and then, groups will come up with their own sayings, especially for use with big events such as field day. A commonly known one is a group in Alabama who uses the saying "Kilo 4 Big Fat Turkey" (K4BFT). But these are pretty rare, most guys use the standard phonetics of some sort, it just makes it easier.
